The ministry plans to put together a draft on India’s IPR policy by the first quarter of 2015, after which it would be made accessible to the public for their comments. We can expect the final document, most probably, by 2015 end or early 2016.

The minister also announced the creation of 1033 posts in various IP offices in the country and enhancement of its infrastructure to facilitate the processing of the applications in an efficient manner.

The filing and examination procedure is also expected to be simplified which would further expedite the entire procedure. Currently it takes approximately four years for a patent application and one year for a trademark and design application to be issued with their first examination report.

All these proposals surely indicate a positive trend contributing towards transparent & speedy processing of IP applications and we expect reduction in number of backlogs at the IPO in next 2 years.
