‘Startups’ redefined in respect of patents in India

New definition to the term ‘startup’ has been introduced by the Government of India, in respect of prosecution of patents in India. The DIPP on 1 December 2017 has notified an amendment to the Rule 2(fb)(i) of the Patent Rules, 2003 to revise the definition of the term ‘startup’ in line with the Startup India Initiative .
New Trademarks Rules, 2017 introduced in India

On 6 March 2017, new Trademarks Rules, 2017 have been published with immediate effect to replace the existing trademark rules, fees and the entire registration procedure. Major objective of the new rules is to facilitate simple and time bound registration system in India.
Patent (Amendment) Rules, 2016 comes into effect

On 16 May 2016, the government published the Patent (Amendment) Rules, 2016 to streamline the examination timeline and to introduce expedited examination system for patents. The amendment has also reduced the deadline to put the application in order for grant.
